This is Episode 34 of Beyond Midnight

“A writer staying at a widow's house finds himself the unwitting vehicle for her dead husband to reach back from the grave.”

About the Series:
This series was written by Michael McCabe and was produced in South Africa. It was a replacement for another series McCabe produced, called SF68. That series adapted famous Sci-fi stories to radio, and it seems to have been the place where McCabe honed his craft. The subject matter to Beyond Midnight was more horror oriented, including madness, murder, and supernatural sleuths! What survives today doesn't involve a horror host per se, but a few include framing narration (by someone involved in the plot) while others just start up the story with no announcer or lead-in whatsoever. So it's possible the regular host or announcer was left off (edited out) of the recordings. The host-- if there was one-- may have only been heard by those who listened to this series when it first aired. It's another radio mystery we may never know for sure, but we're lucky to at least have some of the recordings! There are 43 known episodes, of which the recordings of 27 have survived. Other logs indicate 107 episodes were made, of which only eight are unknown or not available. The logged air dates suggest the series ran an extra year as well, into 1970.

Thought you might like a little more information on this particular show. Here's what I found:
'Little Girl Lost' by Rosemary Timperley aired in 1975
Haunted: Stories Of the Supernatural was a BBC radio series of stories that featured the arcane, creepy, and paranormal. Episodes include Little Girl Lost by Rosemary Timperley, The Late Departure by Glen Chandler, and Listen to the Silence.

I know you have several other episodes on your site and thank you for sharing them!

There's every possibility this one was mislabeled.

I don't really go for comedy stuff very often, but this was delightfully funny. However, I don't know why they call it Liz and the Green Wig. I don't remember any mention of it. Can you clue me in?Thanks for the chuckles.

Thank you Jim for posting one. They are awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and the Suspense story was also very good.

It was a free service so I hate to complain too much, but the lack of notification prior to shutting things down is a pretty crappy thing to do. Otherwise, it forced me to do something I've wanted to do for awhile - move off that site!

What can I say? This was absolutely delightful! i enjoy the Black Mass stsories. It''s like my younger days when we friends stayed up half the night until we had scared ourselves silly, the better if the spend the night party was in a creepy old house, ice cold and dark.

Interesting version of Dracula. Apparently there are many. This was enjoyable but a bit too long in getting to the end. I forced myself to listen but grew tired. It would haave been better to be a half hour instead of an hour. Nevertheless, it was an interesting version.

I checked Jerry Haendinges' vintage radio logs and found thirty episodes of the Hermit's Cave. He showed that there were four episodes missing. I did not find Mr. Randall's Discovery listed among the programs, and that was the original title. I would guess that the original airdate for this would be about 1944, during the West Coast series. Mystery Playhouse was aired in the post WWII years for the "servicemen and women of the United Nations." The United Nations was formed in 1945. The sound quality of this episode is not all that bad, just a few scratches at the very beginning. There is no volume dropout as with many programs recorded in the monoaural age.

The sound quality of this episode is not all that bad, just a few scratches at the very beginning. There is no volume dropout as with many programs recorded in the monoaural age.

As always Jim, you did a good job. Both stories I have heard but both are wonderful and I can listen again and again. I needed this tonight, not feeling so well. I am an old romantic and love stories that end well.

Both "Believe It or Not" storied were lots of fun. I especially like the image of the old guy buried in a chair with his favorite game board. I think that is proper.

Thanks very much, and as we approached the turn to 2012, bless you and all in the coming year, and may you prosper.

Interesting story. I listened on Christmas night and the sixth night of Hanakah. May the candles burn brightly as the 12 days of Christmas move forward.

It is a crazy earthly world.

Thanks for a nice Sunday evening, or should I say early morning monday? This was enjoyable. I had not heard it before. You are always super, Jim. I'm saving the Christmas stories for Chrismas eve and day. I have the job of cooking the ham and in between the Mexican cornbread and the ham, I'll be listening to Relic Radio.

Happy holidays to all.

Both interesting and haunting. Don't remember if I heard the first one before, but this is my second listen to the Virginia Wolf. This time I heard it differently. i reminds me a lot of the film "The Others". Definitely an excellent paring of stories.

Very interesting concept of death. I don't know that I like the very end, the revisits and comments and confusion. At the same time, it provides food for thought, yes, much food for thought for living creatures to contemplate. You see, most people lose the notion for life and in a sense are the walking dead.

Thank you Jim.

Jackie Kelk played many juvenile roles on radio. He was Henry Aldrich's pal, Homer and Jimmy Olsen on Superman. Now in the late Fifties, he had grown to more mature roles like this one in Shadow on the Wall. I recall reading a story with a similar title where two old sisters live with their brother. One of the sisters dies and the other two see her profile in silouette on the wall. I think Alfred Hitchcock did it on his old TV show.

Hi JIm,

I am a great fan of Case Closed and a subscriber on ITunes. I have listened to nearly all the shows available except for the very oldest ones. I can't seem to get any of the programs older than about No. 70 to download. Perhaps there is some trick to it or I am doing something wrong!

Thanks.

As far as I know this is the only surviving adaptation. The BBC did it a couple of times, but no recordings exist.

Yes, rubbut - not to be confused with 'row butt' which is a nautical term the Captain may be familiar with. In a Piratical sense that is.

Wonderful! This has always been one of my favourite plays but I'd no idea it had been recorded for radio. Great to hear it for the first time. Also interesting to hear them say 'robot' (as 'rubbut')- it was a new word and no one had really decided how it should sound.

For the sake of spirit, Happy Halloween all! This was a wondeful story, a story within a story.. I always enjoy anything from this S African program. I wish we could hear them all.

Thanks Jim for a fun Halloween, and do check out Dick's Halloween presentations from the forum, another plum for Halloween. You are the greatest!

CBS Mystery Theater was great... the epic beer commercials and assorted 70s funkiness bring me back to the time I was a kid listening to the radio as our family drove around.

Thank you for posting "The Glass Eye." I haven't thought about it in years until I saw a reference to it on another OTR website. Fortunately, they had the link so that I could find it. I saw it years ago on the Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV show. Boy was I surprized when the dummy suddenly started jumping up and down.

Is that Lou Merrill doing a commercial at 14:36? :D It sure sounds it...

Jim, you don't have any pictures of Lou, do you? I just always wondered what he looked like... I'm guessing he might have looked a little like H.P. Lovecraft. I've used Google to try to find him but I only get pictures of the Lewis guy who wrote or produced Crime Classics.

"Certain slanty-eyed individuals..." I know that early radio wasn't PC, and that there was a war on, but I never thought Arch O. would air his prejudices like that. Still an interesting theme for a story, one with a hefty dash of paranoia, and an otherwise fine listen. I always enjoy filling in the gaps in the Lights Out episodes I've listened to. Thanks for posting this one Jim!

I am not sure if it was Suspense series that had this episode but it was called "Sorry, Wrong Number" and it starred Agnes Moorehead. Wonderful episode and very disturbing as well! She was a great actress anyway, especially in the Bogart movie Dark Passage.

An interesting side note: in Dark Passage her name was Mage Raff. In the early 90's cult movie "A Gun, A Car, A Blonde", the sleazy slimy sister with black hair was named Mage as a tribute to that movie.

I am constantly impressed with the fidelity of these recordings, considering their age. This particular program stars Leslie Woods, a popular radio actress who had played gun molls and other woman. She also played the part of Margo Lane on the Shadow during the Forties. I see some similarities between this story and the Night Gallery show about the mysterious paintings that keep changing. Roddy McDowell played a n'er-do-well who killed his aged painter uncle to get his fortune. The old man's hobby was painting pictures of cemeteries.

This is indeed a classic, it really creeped me out a bit and it was still daytime when I listened to it! May I also suggest Suspense - 'Mission Complete' with James Stewart if there's another Suspense week on the horizon.

I have been enjoying the Whistler on various OTR posts, when I came across yours. When I heard it some fifty years ago, it was on Sunday nights about 8:30 p.m. Although it was a CBS mainstay through the years, it was heard on different nights. Even John Dunning's Encyclopedia of Radio could not pin down the exact night and times through the years. The one I am hearing now "The Alibi" was heard on Sunday nights.

Mercedes MacCambridge has a one woman show here, doing what she does best. She's the Classic Earth Mother, tending to her plant children. This performance came right before her voice characterization of the Devil in "the Exorcist." I had the opportunity to hear her speak at a local college in the early Eighties. Most of the students there knew her only from the Exorcist. I stood up from the back row, during a question and answer period, to let know that I had been a fan since her days on "Inner Sanctum" and "I Love A Mystery." I received a warm blown kiss from the stage, and later an autograph. She was truly the First Lady of Dramatic Radio.

Thanks for posting these Golden Age radio shows. Some of these were broadcast during the time when I was a youngster, but unfortunately, I was not able to hear them because they were way past my bedtime. Now, as a senior citizen with my child-like love of OTR, I can stay up as late as I want to and listen to them. Actually, I put them on right before I got to sleep. They're better than Ovaltine.

Love the OTR Horror series, especially The CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Was listening to the episode "The Real Printer's Devil" and was amused at the odd choice of slang the characters were using. This particular episode came out in '74, but almost seemed to have been written by someone older trying to sound "hip" (e.g., an early 20-something character from the 1970s would not have urged someone to hurry up by using the phrase "C'mon, let's rustle the bustle!" Fun episode, though. Keep up the good work!

This is a very entriging story, which I admit has listened to many times. I have never done any research on it but am curious in a literary way its meaning. Neverthe less this is a very good and thoughtful story. If anyone has any "enlightenment" on it, it would be welcome to hear.

i enjoyed these stories, both and the Believe it or Not. I espeially enjoyed the first, Mr Argularis, a good story of a man dying and his thoughts as he faces death.

Thank you, as always, for these good stories. you never cease to amaze me the stories you present that I haven't heard. It is very refreshing to get a new story, to me, that is.

Hi I have just found these podcasts, and they are brilliant. After many years of listening to OTR it's great to come across completely new episodes. Anyway,I wonder if anyone can help me find the name of another OTR show I heard once but then deleted. It's about a woman called Joan who possessed by another woman. I remember the first time I listened to this, it was pretty scarey. This would fit really well in this strange tales theme.

That Anton Karas zither and Orson's voice make Harry Lime a solid anchor to The Third Man classic. The music conjures that languorous final shot, the cemetery, those last leaves falling (I can smell them), the long shot of Anna walking up and out of Martins' life. I love that one moment in time, and always wish I could have been at the filming. I think the Lives of Harry Lime was so successful because it served as a prequel to the film, putting the movie and that scene into the future again. Still sends chills down my spine.

I heartily agree with your comments concerning the Syfy channel. Not only have they worn out to death the giant monster and apocalyptic scenarios, but whatever theme on their 9pm movie is, they will run a marathon of like movies all bloody day so that by the time 9 o'clock rolls around you are sick to death of the subject, and can't stand to see any more.
