I seem to be the only one commenting, but I just listened again. The 2nd by Virginia is similar to another story by her about a haunted house. that one made the apples drying in the attic the focal point. Again, this one reminds me of the film, “The Others” even more so, especially with the use of the word “say”. That was constantly used in “The Others”. It is very sadly haunting.

Definitely Franz Kafka and that over dramatic actor. Such miserable desparation he always presents. Can’t say I don’t like him, but oh does he paint a grim story. This was an interesting story with the essence of be troubling or such. Of course Kafka is that way anyway, so you get what you get in reading him or listening.

I am glad you put this one up. It was entertaining, for sure. I liked Into the West much better. That’s just because it is lighter than Kafka. I wonder if The Penal Colony was ever turned into a story . . . .

There was a low grade B movie in the Fifties called “The Screaming Skull” where a man remarries and brings his new wife back to his home where his first wife died mysteriously. The gimmick of pouring melted lead into the ear of a sleeping person was also used. A skull kept appearing mysteriously around the house and there was the sound of a screaming woman.

The first time I heard this on my radio at night, it was by far the most terrifying radio program I had ever listened to. Couldn’t sleep the entire night, had a hard time listening through it even. The second time around it was much easier as I was 5 years older.

The producer and narrator of the Black Mass, and lead actor in this one, was Erik Bauersfeld. The San Francisco Chronicle just did an interview with him that garnered a meaningful amount of national attention, due to the fact that he did the voice for Admiral Akbar, the fish-headed commander of Rebel forces in Return of the Jedi. He’s now 90 years old, and the bit in the interview that seems to have generated the most attention is the fact that, despite voicing a now iconic Star Wars character, he’s never seen any of the Star Wars movies.

Very creepy! But lots of fun for a Saturday night. I don’t remember this one, which makes it better. There is that other one with simalrites, the one where the guy stays in a room all night, but of course, doesn’t survive it. I’m not completely sure, but Jim, I think you posted it. This one had the slant of shyster in it. Seems like the shyster got hers in the end. I always enjoy a ghostly type story.

Years ago, when I first began collecting OTR programs, I got this program from a collector friend who had his entire collection on reel to reel tape. He had them indexed in a catalogue from which I could choose what I wanted and have it transferred to cassette tape. This took a great of time and I was grateful to him for doing it. I listened to it on a tape recorder at about nine o’clock at night with the lights offf. This gave me the perfect atmosphere as it brought back memories to me as a boy of six. I enjoyed this particular show because it still had the Bromo Seltzer commercial as many of the Inner Sanctum shjows of that period only exist as AFRS recordings. The Lipton Tea sponsored shows exist because Lipton wanted copyright copies. This prolgram is a great show for Halloween parties where everyone sits in the dark and listens to it, preferably on one of those Retro Philco radios from the Thirties that were sold at Walmart years ago. I still have mine, even though I listen to OTR on line.

I am glad you played this again. I remember last year when you played and one listener what a little nuts about it, but it’s a good zombie story, and fairly close to the truth. True zombies are actually dead but frequently brain damaged from lack of oxygen while in their buried state, as the first actually noted one who was proclaimed dead at the clinic. The poison actually stowed everything to the point that without high tech tests he appeared dead. When “brought back from the grave” they do look pretty bizarre, walk that way and mumble that way.

there has been recent research on the poison but I haven’t checked out the results. Their poison is deadly to humans. It is said that the poison in one fish can kill up to 1200 adults.

One thing, Jim, do you know who that actor is? I still think he’s a bit over the top in his drama. I would have to wonder if he suffered from sore throat after a performance.

Sounds like the change-over has been a huge pain in the neck for you. Thank you for continuing to offer these fantastic free podcasts. My vote would definitely be for keeping Suspense as its own separate stream.

This was a very good modern rendition of this story. It has been years since I heard the story. i remember in college one summer in an English class We were asked to write an essay on the story. I never had read it but knew the story line, so set forth with my imagination to write. I received an A plus. And I had never read it. I have since, but this tonight was quite interesting. also enjoyed The Saint. Thank you Jim for holding true to good entertainment.

This is the second I have heard to tale and better than the first. I appreciate the Black Mass tales and find them enchanting and terrible at the same time. “A writer staying at a widow’s house finds himself the unwitting vehicle for her dead husband to reach back from the grave.”

About the Series:
This series was written by Michael McCabe and was produced in South Africa. It was a replacement for another series McCabe produced, called SF68. That series adapted famous Sci-fi stories to radio, and it seems to have been the place where McCabe honed his craft. The subject matter to Beyond Midnight was more horror oriented, including madness, murder, and supernatural sleuths! What survives today doesn’t involve a horror host per se, but a few include framing narration (by someone involved in the plot) while others just start up the story with no announcer or lead-in whatsoever. So it’s possible the regular host or announcer was left off (edited out) of the recordings. The host– if there was one– may have only been heard by those who listened to this series when it first aired. It’s another radio mystery we may never know for sure, but we’re lucky to at least have some of the recordings! There are 43 known episodes, of which the recordings of 27 have survived. Other logs indicate 107 episodes were made, of which only eight are unknown or not available. The logged air dates suggest the series ran an extra year as well, into 1970.

Interesting version of Dracula. Apparently there are many. This was enjoyable but a bit too long in getting to the end. I forced myself to listen but grew tired. It would haave been better to be a half hour instead of an hour. Nevertheless, it was an interesting version.

I checked Jerry Haendinges’ vintage radio logs and found thirty episodes of the Hermit’s Cave. He showed that there were four episodes missing. I did not find Mr. Randall’s Discovery listed among the programs, and that was the original title. I would guess that the original airdate for this would be about 1944, during the West Coast series. Mystery Playhouse was aired in the post WWII years for the “servicemen and women of the United Nations.” The United Nations was formed in 1945. The sound quality of this episode is not all that bad, just a few scratches at the very beginning. There is no volume dropout as with many programs recorded in the monoaural age.

As always Jim, you did a good job. Both stories I have heard but both are wonderful and I can listen again and again. I needed this tonight, not feeling so well. I am an old romantic and love stories that end well.

Both “Believe It or Not” storied were lots of fun. I especially like the image of the old guy buried in a chair with his favorite game board. I think that is proper.

Both interesting and haunting. Don’t remember if I heard the first one before, but this is my second listen to the Virginia Wolf. This time I heard it differently. i reminds me a lot of the film “The Others”. Definitely an excellent paring of stories.

Very interesting concept of death. I don’t know that I like the very end, the revisits and comments and confusion. At the same time, it provides food for thought, yes, much food for thought for living creatures to contemplate. You see, most people lose the notion for life and in a sense are the walking dead.

Jackie Kelk played many juvenile roles on radio. He was Henry Aldrich’s pal, Homer and Jimmy Olsen on Superman. Now in the late Fifties, he had grown to more mature roles like this one in Shadow on the Wall. I recall reading a story with a similar title where two old sisters live with their brother. One of the sisters dies and the other two see her profile in silouette on the wall. I think Alfred Hitchcock did it on his old TV show.

As far as I know this is the only surviving adaptation. The BBC did it a couple of times, but no recordings exist.

Yes, rubbut – not to be confused with ‘row butt’ which is a nautical term the Captain may be familiar with. In a Piratical sense that is.

Wonderful! This has always been one of my favourite plays but I’d no idea it had been recorded for radio. Great to hear it for the first time. Also interesting to hear them say ‘robot’ (as ‘rubbut’)- it was a new word and no one had really decided how it should sound.

Thank you for posting “The Glass Eye.” I haven’t thought about it in years until I saw a reference to it on another OTR website. Fortunately, they had the link so that I could find it. I saw it years ago on the Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV show. Boy was I surprized when the dummy suddenly started jumping up and down.

Jim, you don’t have any pictures of Lou, do you? I just always wondered what he looked like… I’m guessing he might have looked a little like H.P. Lovecraft. I’ve used Google to try to find him but I only get pictures of the Lewis guy who wrote or produced Crime Classics.

“Certain slanty-eyed individuals…” I know that early radio wasn’t PC, and that there was a war on, but I never thought Arch O. would air his prejudices like that. Still an interesting theme for a story, one with a hefty dash of paranoia, and an otherwise fine listen. I always enjoy filling in the gaps in the Lights Out episodes I’ve listened to. I am not sure if it was Suspense series that had this episode but it was called “Sorry, Wrong Number” and it starred Agnes Moorehead. Wonderful episode and very disturbing as well! She was a great actress anyway, especially in the Bogart movie Dark Passage.

An interesting side note: in Dark Passage her name was Mage Raff. In the early 90′s cult movie “A Gun, A Car, A Blonde”, the sleazy slimy sister with black hair was named Mage as a tribute to that movie.

I am constantly impressed with the fidelity of these recordings, considering their age. This particular program stars Leslie Woods, a popular radio actress who had played gun molls and other woman. She also played the part of Margo Lane on the Shadow during the Forties. I see some similarities between this story and the Night Gallery show about the mysterious paintings that keep changing. Roddy McDowell played a n’er-do-well who killed his aged painter uncle to get his fortune. The old man’s hobby was painting pictures of cemeteries.
