On this episode of Orson Welles: On The Air, we’ll hear from another radio program that Orson Welles produced titled This Is My Best. Actually the series outlasted Welles, who was fired after a little over a month with the show. Orson was criticized for being difficult to work with, and accused of using the show to further his movie career which led to his departure from the show.
We’ll hear Anything Can Happen which first aired April 24, 1945.

We’ve been featuring shows that Orson Welles was directly affiliated with up until now. This week we’ll hear one of his appearances on Suspense. Suspense was a very long running show that first hit the airwaves in 1942 and ran for the next twenty years. This two-part episode, titled Donovan’s Brain, aired May 18 and 25 of 1944 originally. Both parts are included here.

The Mercury Theater was the first theater company to make its way on radio. On July 11, 1938, the Mercury Theater On The Air broadcast its first episode, Dracula. Running until December 4, 1938 when it became The Campbell Playhouse, the Mercury Theater On The Air featured one hour adaptations of classic novels. With Orson Welles at the helm of course!

We kick off this new show with something very old. On this episode, we’ll hear Orson Welles as The Shadow in Death House Rescue from September 26, 1937. This is the earliest example of Welles on the radio that I’ve been able to find. His role as The Shadow was anonymous, no doubt to maintain the mystique of the crime fighter!
